Becky's Greenhouse Musings
Welcome to our 30th year of Becky's Greenhouse and growing plants. When Larry and I started this adventure in 1984 reopening the Larry’s Garage never thought I would be a greenhouse grower for 30 years. When we decided to reopen the shop, Larry’s Garage, it was during the farm crisis of the 80’s. So he was busy right away with the farmers pulling equipment out of the groves to use with their farming operation. We had our small family, and we made the commitment to make the small business work. We have been working together since then so how many years is that? 35 years of working together. I started to run after parts, answer the phone and do the bookwork..
“Kenny Weber” helped us fixed up the front of the shop into an office. He build a counter out of a door and another door was my desk. I said that will work, and stay this way. He told me,” I give you a week before it is full of piles.” I guess Kenny knew me well enough but it worked and that we had till our local grocery story closed we decided to offer groceries, so in a matter of 2 weeks we used the front office to do small amounts of groceries, freezers were in the shop and we still had milk and bread and few essentials here in Dougherty.
The dream to have a store came around in one year we build a store around 2 trailer houses. Our kids remember that summer as their dad left for his 2 weeks of active duty that they clean out the trailer houses so Larry could cut one in half. So each half was placed for each room in the Becky’s Mall. The Second trailer was our office, and that is where I cooked our noon meals for 10 years.
In 1985, I went to a marketing class and they recommended that a small business becomes diversified. So I thought I like plants, We had a friend in Rockwell that was growing plants so we bought bedding plants from them for a couple of years. Don Boeilje and Mike Echleberger decided it was time to quit that business so we bought their 2 greenhouses, tables, and plastic for my first growing 30 years ago. 1989…
The rest is history. We raised the 3 kids working in Larry’s Garage and Becky’s Mall along side of running Becky’s Greenhouse.
I have advertised on KLMJ radio station for 23 years. Doing the Gardening and You radio show every Saturday for that time. Always included a devotion about what the Lord does for us. When you are a gardener you have to believe as so much is built on faith.
So Gardening and You has been my theme thru out the 30 years. I started off doing newsletters, radio show was next. I have done many classes on how to garden on different topics and now posting a daily blog about gardening thru Weebly and on Facebook.
I have mentor many of first year gardeners and now they are continuing to grow in their gardens and their knowledge.
I have worked with kids to get them to enjoy plants, gardening and just working in the dirt. So I will continue to do Gardening and You.
