weekly Radio Show for May 2, 2020
Good morning, welcome to my Garden show, Gardening and you. I am Becky Litterer from Becky’s Greenhouse in Dougherty. This show is about more than just the different aspects of gardening, it’s about how we can help you with your gardening needs. WOW
We have been open for over a week now, and the gardeners have been good. We are so blessed with all that we have here and all of you that have come. We have plenty of room to shop in and look for plants. This week we have worked on getting plants out of the greenhouse. We have 7 long racks full of plants that we have grown out of the greenhouse. Last night Swifts' delivered perennials, plus we got more vegetables, more herbs, and more annuals for you to choose from. 2 long racks of those. That makes 9 racks of plants for you to walk around and look. When you come into the greenhouse you will see that is full yet too. So a large selection for you to choose from. Do you like succulents? It isn't far for me to say we have over 1000 pots of them. Priced from .50 to $10.00 large selection of different ones for you to have in your garden. Hanging baskets are out and ready to go to your patio. Landscape pots are filled out with annuals and will give you the instant color for your garden area. Planting your vegetable garden we have the cold season crop such as cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, red cabbage. We have a good selection of bulk garden seeds. This year we have tested them to see if they germinate and the ones that didn't grow we replaced with new seeds. Just ask and we will get them together for you one teaspoon and tablespoon at a time. Reasonable priced for the amount of seeds you can get from those packets. You ask about tomatoes and peppers we have them ready to go into your garden. We grew a nice selection of tomatoes, but With the Swift order last night we have more hot peppers and cherry tomatoes. You have asked about vine plants such as cucumbers, squash, zucchini. Can I give you some advice? I don't want you to plant these till after June 1. If you wait till June 1-June 15th to plant you will miss the first round of bugs. Also the vine plants do not like cool nights. It is good now and has been. BUT this next week the temperature at night as been predicted to get into the 30's so there we go a cool night. With that in mind, we are now planting the seeds for the vine plants, so they will easily be ready to plant in June. I have had gardeners ask about sweet potato vines plants. Again the grower we get them from doesn't ship to Iowa till middle of May, so we will have them then. They also don't like the cool or cold nights. Sweet eating potatoes like a very warm garden. I am sorry to report that we are out of seed potatoes, but we do have onion sets yet and they can be planted now in your garden.
This week has been a week of deliveries. We got in strawberry plants They are June bearing variety. When I called the grower/broker about more, I got the last 300 plants. Do you want to start or add to your asparagus bed we got in asparagus crowns? If you don't know how to plant them, I will show you. Strawberries and asparagus plan on planting in a 12" area. They each are a $1.00. We got our order of trees, fruit trees, shrubs, rose bushes, grapes, Blackberries, raspberries in this week. Also some really nice looking peony bushes. I have to tell you one of the gardeners was impressed with the selection of bushes. For the unusual plants we have carnivorous plants - Venus fly trap, lots of pitcher plants so they are fun to grow.
Along with all of this, we are continuing to grow more vegetables for your garden. In my weekly blog I showed pictures of the MIRACLE in this house. We plant, they are happy and they do grow in a few weeks. A miracle of growing. Just ask the ones that have helped me plant. Debbie, Ann and Lyle. One reason for such success this season is we replaced the plastic last fall, so the light and the heat are at their best. If you can't get to your garden till later we will continue to have plants for you. If you have room in your garden, we will have plants for you thru the season. As I have said, it is predicted to get cool next week. If you ask if you should plant tender annuals and vegetables such as the tomatoes and peppers. We can and have for more years than not we have had a killing frost around May 15. Last year it was May 14. Killing temperature is below 30 degrees and it will be hard to stop it even with covering. But if you see it is to get that cold, cover your plants and see what happens. We are all anxious to work outside, do something different and watch the color come into our lives. I get it. I have been planting since January and it gives me lots of peace and joy. I just wanted you to know what to watch for with the temperature. This year is a different year than we have ever experience and being home more you have time and want to garden. I get it and glad to help you with your gardening needs. I have been doing this for 31 years growing plants for you. I can't believe that but I have. With my two new knees it is easier then it has been for several years. We will do curb side pickup. But you need to give me 24 hours to pull the order. Most of the time I am here by myself, so I can get the order together just need some time. Call me at Becky's Greenhouse 641-794-3337 for any questions. Yes we need to talk about Larry's Garage. A little different message this week. We know how uncertain these times are, people are not traveling just staying at home. Larry has seen it at his shop. We want to thank the customers that have been in to help keep Larry busy. But if you do know of some work you would like him to do for you just give us a call. We will get thru this by working together. Thanks and stay well.
In closing here is a prayer to share
