More of plants growing at Becky's Greenhouse, Rhoeo and Pistachio White I wanted to share with you a couple of plants that are growing the miracle greenhouse. Rhoeo tricolor and tradescantia pistachio white. You might think I forgot some of the letters in this plant but this is what it is called. The Rhoeo Tricolor, also known as Moses-in-the-Cradle or Oyster Plant, is a vibrant and hardy ornamental plant characterized by its striking variegated foliage and minimal care requirements. Characteristics Botanical Name: Tradescantia spathacea Common Names: Moses-in-the-Cradle, Oyster Plant, Boat Lily Appearance: The plant features lance-shaped leaves with a mix of green, creamy white, and pink hues, often displaying a rich purple underside. It typically grows to a height of 8 to 16 inches and can spread 12 to 24 inches wide. Small white flowers may occasionally appear among the leaves. Growing Conditions Light: Rhoeo Tricolor thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but prolonged exposure may scorch the leaves. An east-facing window is ideal for indoor placement. Soil: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A combination of potting soil with perlite or sand enhances drainage and prevents root rot. The preferred soil pH is slightly acidic, between 5.0 and 6.5. Watering: Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. Rhoeo Tricolor prefers slightly moist conditions but is susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures ranging from 60°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C) and should be protected from frost. Fertilization: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth. Repotting: Repot the plant every 1-2 years as it outgrows its container. Benefits and Uses Aesthetic Appeal: The vibrant foliage adds color and texture to indoor and outdoor spaces, making it a popular choice for ornamental gardening. Low Maintenance: Rhoeo Tricolor is drought-tolerant and requires minimal care, making it suitable for novice gardeners. Air Purification: This plant can help improve indoor air quality. Toxicity: Caution is advised as all parts of the plant are considered toxic if ingested, causing irritation to the mouth and stomach. It can also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. In summary, the Rhoeo Tricolor is a visually stunning and resilient plant that can enhance any garden or indoor space with its colorful foliage and low maintenance needs. However, potential owners should be aware of its toxicity and handle it with care. Taken from copilot Yes, this is from the same family but it is different. Tradescantia Pistachio White is a fast-growing, variegated trailing plant with pistachio green and creamy white foliage, ideal for hanging baskets, mixed containers, or as a ground cover. Appearance and Growth Tradescantia Pistachio White features medium green leaves with random dark green and white stripes, giving it a striking variegated look. The leaves are ovate and pointed, densely growing on thick, trailing stems that can root as they spread, allowing the plant to cover large areas quickly. It typically grows 6 to 12 inches tall and can reach 1 to 3 feet in length, making it suitable for cascading over containers or as a ground cover in shaded areas. Light Requirements This plant thrives in bright, indirect light indoors to maintain its vivid variegation. Direct sunlight, especially harsh afternoon sun, can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may cause the leaf markings to fade and the plant to become leggy. Outdoors, it can tolerate partial sun to full shade, but some sunlight is necessary to preserve its variegated foliage. Watering and Soil Tradescantia Pistachio White prefers consistent moisture but is susceptible to root rot, so it should be planted in well-draining, loose soil. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry, avoiding both overwatering and prolonged dryness. Applying a slow-release fertilizer with higher nitrogen in spring can promote healthy leaf growth. Hardiness and Placement The plant is hardy in USDA zones 10-12, but can be grown as an annual in cooler climates. It should be protected from temperatures below 50°F to prevent leaf damage. Indoors, it is adaptable as a houseplant, while outdoors it can be used in shaded beds, borders, or containers. Propagation and Maintenance Tradescantia Pistachio White is easy to propagate from cuttings, allowing you to create new plants. Long trailing stems may become heavy and pull roots from the soil, so trimming is recommended. Dead or damaged growth should be removed to maintain plant health. Uses This versatile plant is ideal for hanging baskets, mixed containers, or as a ground cover. Its trailing habit and variegated foliage add visual interest to indoor and outdoor spaces, brightening shaded areas with its white accents.
